What is a
Major Professor?
Your major
professor is the committee member from your major field that serves
as:
§
Your primary academic
advisor
§
Your principal thesis
advisor
§
General mentor for
your academic program and your research.
Your major
professor must be a faculty member who is approved to direct
graduate students at your level. For our program you can work with
anyone at the university, in any department or program. Some of our
students have major professors from other organizations, such as
federal agencies like the EPA. If your major professor has not
worked with an Environmental Science Graduate student before, we
have a very simple process to add them to our faculty list.
Your major
professor will help you choose the courses you take and guide your
thesis research. Sometimes students work for their major professors
in their labs if they have funding and sometimes students must find
financial aid for themselves. After you begin your program, your
major professor may be able to help you find funding sources for
part of your education.
